Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a popular photo-sharing app is worth far more: Facebook announced it is purchasing Instagram for $1 billion.

To put the sale in perspective, the Wall Street Journal's Dennis K. Berman tweeted: "Remember this day. 551-day-old Instagram is worth $1 billion. 116-year-old New York Times Co.: $967 million."

The purchase of the San Francisco-based photo-sharing app is the largest financial acquisition in Facebook's history and is being made in cash. The deal will be completed by June, according to the AP.

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users," CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."

In a move to reassure Instagram's growing audience of users, Facebook announced that it will continue to let Instagram operate independently. However, Facebook is hiring Instagram's 10 employees.

"We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience," Zuckerberg wrote. "We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook."

Wired reports the sale will yield huge earnings for Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom, along with the company's co-founder and several investments firms that have provided financial backing for Instagram. Systrom reportedly owns 40 percent of the company, meaning he will take home $400 million from the sale. Co-founder Mike Krieger will earn about $100 million from his 10 percent ownership share.

Longstanding University of Miami/Royal Caribbean partnership on Explorer of the Seas to serve as model

MIAMI A report highlighted in EOS, the American Geophysical Union's premier international newspaper, on April 3 proposes a formal partnership between the ocean-observing community and the global shipping industry for the systematic long-term study of the ocean water column from surface to depth. According to the report prepared by Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research/International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (SCOR/IAPSO) Working Group 133, the rationale is that commercial ships on the high seas offer a cost-effective opportunity to contribute to directly addressing a significant observational gap that currently exists. Systematic long-term observation of the water column would serve four distinct and critical needs: forecast/ nowcast applications; studies of ocean processes and dynamics; effects on climatology; and detailed knowledge of the interior state of the global ocean.

"The project builds upon the successful program initiated through NOAA's Collaborative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami (UM), in collaboration with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which has already generated more than 200 scientific papers and presentations over the past decade," said Peter Ortner, UM Research Professor and Director of CIMAS, who served as co-editor of the OceanScope report. "As part of the SCOR/IAPSO working group, we shared scientific and technical best practices from our experiences aboard the Explorer of the Seas as well as recent advances in fully automating shipboard systems which are being implemented onboard the Allure of the Seas."

What is truly unique about OceanScope is that it will directly measure ocean circulation dynamics, create synergies by integrating circulation measurement with present and planned shipboard observation programs and then freely and rapidly distribute all the data collected.

"Royal Caribbean is extremely pleased with the results that have come from this partnership" said Rich Pruitt, associate vice president, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "Our corporation is proud of the contribution that the Explorer of the Seas has made to understanding the global climate system and the seas on which she sails. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and to the discoveries and understanding that will surely come from expanding this important initiative."

The CSCOR/IAPSO working group, co-chaired by H. Thomas Rossby, Professor Emeritus at the University of Rhode Island, identified ocean observation and scientific needs, routes for sustained observation, vessel types suitable for sustained observation, available and future technologies to meet mission requirements, data and communications needs, exclusive economic zone questions, and how the OceanScope partnership should be organized. Uniquely the working group included not only scientists but also ship owners and operators, naval architects, government agencies and ocean technology companies. The plan is being enthusiastically received by industry organizations including the International Chamber of Shipping and the World Ocean Council. OceanScope proposes to first tackle the North Atlantic Ocean basin because several ocean observing initiatives are already under way in that region. A 5-year ramp-up is envisioned, which would also serve to fully test, evaluate, and refine the program before its global implementation.

Long Distance Relationship (LDR) is the hardest of all. It requires the most important thing in a relationship; which is Trust. I've been in a ot of LDR, and some of them did not work out. Trust wasn't there, therefore Love wasn't there with us too. I think anyone that has been through of this type of relationship must know how it all goes. Whether it went down the drain, or ended up living closer to each other.

LDR isn't necessarily bad.?Distances are needed sometimes, for the feeling to grow deeper as we miss our loved ones. Not seeing each other and all. However, Internet helps! Facebook, Twitter, etc. But don't you think its silly for to just dating that way? Yes but what else can we do? Those are the best we best have other than calling and texting via mobile phone.

Maintain the excitement; this is also a very important weapon to keep an LDR works. As the couple may not meet as much as a normal couple, they must always be excited to reach each other even though just chatting on Facebook or tweeting on Twitter. The excitement helps keep the relationship alive, seriously.

Some say having an LDR is heavenly good, as they become less attached to the relationship and free from the commitment. Well, this must came from unmatured people. Yes! Why? Mature thinker most certaily will not think this way. Less attachment and free from commitment? Oh, no mature-thinker-type of lovers will ever think so in a relationship. LDR has its pros and cons, but most of it are cons, I know. It is a test. You will pass it if you really are meant to.
